Science
Through Science we will endeavour to fulfill the school's mission statement. We will achieve this by creating a classroom environment where all opinions are valued and respected.
We will develop an understanding of how Science links with a variety of subjects and themes. Through Scientific investigation and the analysis of data we will attempt to explain and understand scientific principles. This will allow ourselves to become fully involved in the school and the wider community.
The Science department consists of 6 laboratories, (3 upstairs and 3 downstairs). Each lab has Gas, water and electrical supplies, enabling all types of scientific experiments to be carried out.
The main part of the Science department was constructed in the early 1900's. The department was renovated more recently in 2000 and 2002, with all laboratories being completely refitted
The department has recently purchased four sets of data logging equipment allowing classes to use this recent improvement in Science to allow more accurate and reliable measurements to be made.
Courses
GCSE Science
GCSE Science provides knowledge and understanding of science that is relevant to students’ everyday life. Our aim is to engage students – to stimulate excitement and intrigue about how science works. The course helps students develop their questioning, analytical and evaluative skills alongside core practical skills. GCSE Science is based on the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study for Science. The specification contains twelve topics that cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
GCSE Additional Science
GCSE Additional Science builds on the knowledge and understanding that students have gained from GCSE Science. Together, they allow students to progress onto the individual GCE Biology, GCE Chemistry and GCE Physics qualifications and onto higher education. The course helps students develop their questioning, analytical and evaluative skills alongside core practical skills. The course is based on twelve topics.
BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science
The first certificate in Applied Science, enables students to study Science from a vocational view point. The course is based upon students producing a portfolio of evidence covering a range of Scientific topics. The First Certificate in Applied Science consists of three core units that provide for a combined total of 180 guided learning hours for the completed qualification. Candidates must complete the three core units. The course is assessed by 100% coursework, from assignments on each of the three topics. This subject is equivalent to 2 GCSE grades A*-C in Applied Science.
Rewards
Science is an exciting and interesting subject, promoting experimental investigation, in depth research, project work and extended writing. We believe that whatever form achievement takes – whether it is a well thought-out verbal response in class, or a piece of quality written work, it should be rewarded. This engenders a desire to progress.
The rewards procedure must be straightforward and easy to administer. Merits can be awarded in a students’ diary. This will be given for high quality work or if a student has put a great deal of effort into a piece of work (see marking policy).
Praise logs should also be used for a particularly good effort or piece of work. Praise post cards can be sent home or presented to students in assembly.
