English
English is vital for communication and here at Our Lady and St Chad Catholic Sports College, the study of this core subject is taken very seriously. The English Department is a devoted and thriving part of the school, taking an active role in ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to flourish and excel in this essential subject.The English Department is involved in many areas of school life. We collaborate successfully with both SEN and Gifted and Talented co-ordinators to ensure ALL pupils can both access and progress in English. The department is also involved in the school’s Leadership programme, enabling pupils to gain confidence and acquire leadership skills.
The English Department offers pupils varied and engaging lessons, to suit all learning styles. Our devotion to learning and achievement is reflected in our continued successes in KS3, GCSE and A’ Level examinations. We constantly strive to both repeat and improve these results, in order to offer pupils every success when leaving school to travel their chosen path.
Courses
At KS3, pupils study a variety of topics focusing on both non-fiction and fictional texts, poetry, media and drama, to enable them to acquire skills in the three key areas: reading, writing and speaking and listening. The topics are all linked to the National Curriculum Framework for English, as required at KS3.GCSE: Pupils are offered the opportunity to study both GCSE English and GCSE English Literature, resulting in pupils being able to acquire two GCSEs in English. The English Department uses AQA examination board, specification A, which enables pupils to study a wide variety of interesting texts from different time periods and acquire reading, writing and speaking and listening skills.
The English Department also offers pupils the opportunity to study English Literature at both AS and A2 Level. This course has been extremely successful, resulting in high achieving outcomes.
An Entry Level qualification is offered, to enable all pupils to achieve a qualification in English.
GCSE Drama is another option that pupils can consider. It is a popular course that pupils enjoy, which is reflected in the results that have been achieved.
Lessons
English is a core subject and the English Department strives to give pupils innovative and engaging lessons. Lessons aim to cater for all abilities, and all learning styles. Lessons are structured and generally follow the four part lesson plan, with a starter activity to improve pupils’ skills, an introduction to the topic, an opportunity for pupils to develop their understanding and a plenary to assess learning.
All KS3 lessons are linked to the National Curriculum Framework for English and GCSE lessons are linked to the AQA assessment objectives.
